Historical Thinking
High school learners from across the region will critically and creatively examine how social change happens. By actively constructing the history of Pittsburgh’s environmental Smoke Control campaign (1940s-1950s), learners will identify strategies and practices that were used to advance change or prevent it.
Relevance
With the guidance of local activists, learners will consider how this new understanding applies to issues that are important to them today.
Design
To celebrate and reflect on their experience, learners will design an exhibit to be installed at the Heinz History Center and opened to the public. The display will remix the story of Smoke Control in a way that demonstrates its relevance to today’s issues and challenges.
